Out of Office Curated: Issue 9--Montreal Issue (My top poutine pick inside!)

OUT OF OFFICE CURATED

Let's explore the world

one museum, and one plate at a time

Bon Matin Reader,

Today I am talking about one of my favorite cities in the world, Montreal, QC, Canada.

But first, I want to flash back to about a year ago. A WhatsApp text group was busy with back-and-forths about an upcoming trip to Italy. A group of us Americans and Canadians were excited to get together and celebrate a friend's 50th. Houses in remote Italian towns were being booked, wine tastings and tours were getting reserved, and I had already started to think about what I was going to pack. (Yes, I am this person.)

Using points, we booked portions of our flights, and then new opportunities to add days to our trip had us celebrate another friend’s birthday in London and my birthday in Montreal—stitching together business class tickets along the way.

(Find out how I was able to do this)

This newsletter kicks off the trip that took us from Canada to England, then on to Italy, and finally Denmark.

Stop 1: Montreal

Montreal was never a city I thought about before I started dating a Canadian, and after I visited, I thought about all the things I had been missing all my life.

It isn’t just poutine and the best bagels on earth. It's something else. It's a pedestrian city that is full of life and late nights. There are a few cities I think I could relocate to, and Montreal tops that list. (If only the winter weren’t so long.)

I ❤️ Montreal so much. I could go on for days about how great the public transportation is, how phenomenal the food and wine are, and how European it feels.

If you are planning a trip to Montreal this year, please contact me. I have tons of recommendations.

✈️ Porter Airlines constantly has 20%- 25% sales ✈️ One just ended, but there will be another soon.

Montreal Itinerary

In a hypothetical scenario where I only had 24 hours in Montreal, this is how I would spend it. These are my favorite places to see, eat, and drink.

Coffee: Structure Coffee

This is my favorite coffee shop in Montreal. The coffee is skillfully made and concentrates on the nuances and flavors of coffee without the fluff.

Thing to do: Tour of Habitat 67

If you are a fan of architecture and sustainability, you have to tour Habitat 67. Moshe Safdie designed this dream of communal living for the 1967 World Expo.

Dinner: Vin Mon Lapin

Montreal has many restaurants that I love, but if I were to choose one place that really gives you a picture of Montreal, this would be it. It starts with a fantastic selection of Canadian wines and continues with ingredients plucked from local markets. The service is always fun.

BTW: My weakness dish pictured--chips and French onion dip.

Drinks: The Coldroom

This bar in an old cellar makes some of the best cocktails I have had.

My favorite poutine

Bonus: Subscriber-only tip

Chez Tousignant has my favorite poutine in Montreal. I think it is better that La Banquise and all the other well-known places serving this iconic dish.

The best thing you can do this month

If you are thinking about traveling this year, even for a weekend, the best thing you can do is set up an intro call with me. Setting up clients takes some time, and it isn’t as easy as reading your credit card over the phone—I don’t recommend this for safety reasons.

During that call, we will discuss your hotel likes and dislikes, the things you like to do during a trip, and other aspects of a perfect vacation.

If you are able to leave the United States for any time during the next four years, I strongly recommend it. [Best Countries For Expats]

Travel Trends

Thailand

In the travel industry, we call this the White Lotus effect. Since the show started its third season, trips to Thailand have tripled. If you want to travel to Thailand, let’s chat about which area is best for what you want to do. Get advisor recommended hotels and places to eat.

Also, the destinations for seasons 1 (Hawaii) and 2 (Sicily) are very hot right now.

Portugal

Two people have contacted me about Portugal in the last month.

I have some great recommendations for where to stay and places to eat. (Also, the weirdest little museum I have ever experienced.)

I just booked this private pastel de nata cooking class for clients this week.

Deals

15% off the Mandarin Oriental Portfolio until September 30th.

My FORA profile picture is from The Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona.

On our honeymoon trip to Spain, we ate at the Michelin-starred Moments.

A few years later, we jumped at the chance to stay there--when my husband's company paid for it. ;)

There are some of the biggest in Spain. This is a great deal to jump on if you want a luxury stay for less.

Not in your budget? Not to worry, I have tons of properties I can book.
